Wood flooring from sustainable forests
C & M, like many of our customers are concerned about the impact of the wood
flooring trade on the environment. In response, we are trying to do the best we
can by sourcing timber from sustainable forests, and collecting wood dust (as we
work) to prepare our own gap filling solution.
Wood Flooring London
There are a number of factors that should be considered when deciding to fit
wood flooring. C & M offer
wood flooring advice enabling you to make an informed decision as to
which type of wood flooring would be the most suitable for your home/workplace.
The five most important things you should consider when choosing a wood floor or
hardwood flooring are as follows:
- Budget as this determines the quality of the wood flooring.
- Choice of wood floor according to the rooms use.
- Choice of style/ design to match and/or compliment the rooms decor;
- Choice of wood flooring product with the most suitable surface finish which can
handle the traffic for that specific area/room
- Always use a professional wood flooring contractor as there are many technical concerns
that need to be taken into consideration when installing and maintaining wood flooring.
Hardwood Flooring vs. Engineered Flooring
Hardwood Flooring
Hardwood flooring comprises of solid boards of wood which can be
laid in most areas of your home/workplace. However, we would not recommend hardwood
flooring where moisture is present i.e. cellars or basements.
Hardwood floors can be installed on top of under-floor heating systems but some
species of wood are more suitable than others.
C & M can advise you upon consultation.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring
Engineered hardwood flooring is made from manufactured floor boards
which have a three or five ply laminated construction. The dimensions of these floor
boards mean they are less susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity, making
them ideal floor coverings for cellars/ basements or over under-floor heating systems.
It is important to note that when installing any hardwood floor over a radiant heating
system, the maximum temperature of the sub-floor should never exceed 80 (F). For
the correct water temperature inside the heating pipes, please refer to flooring
manufacturer's guidelines.

Floor Installation Process
There are three different methods for installing your chosen floor which are:
- Nailing
- Gluing
- Floating
The method used for your hardwood installation will depend upon the type of flooring
product you have chosen, where the flooring will be installed and the type of sub-floor.
Nailing Wooden Flooring
Nailing wooden floor refers to the wood floor being nailed directly to joists, ply
sub-floor or battons using secret nails.
Gluing Wooden Flooring
Wooden flooring can be adhered to most surfaces with adhesive.
Floating Wooden Flooring
The floating process enables your wooden floor to be installed on most surfaces.
All of the afore-mentioned methods require for the sub-floor to be level.
Floor Levelling
The process for levelling an un-even floor will depend on the type of sub-floor
and height restrictions.
- This first step is only required for Concrete/Ceramic (or similar) floors where
a Latex self-levelling compound is applied.
- Lay a 9/12/18 mm ply sub-floor.
